Artist Statement:
This carousel book is composed of four layers of a risograph-printed topographical map from 1897. Creating the illusion of being everywhere and nowhere, it can be read as a map that represents a physical place that is unreachable and unnavigable. The reader is forced to observe its history without context or accessibility of time.
I wanted to highlight the dynamism of the patterns created by repeated layers of the same map. The overlapping lines, colors, and levels within each panel speak to the disorientation maps can create when your sense of direction is lost. Utilizing the brightly colored inks used in tandem with a risograph machine highlights the bold and dynamic contrast of the historic map used. Using colors not typically found in navigational maps, this book transforms into a three-dimensional representation of “place” rather than a functional version of the two-dimensional tool. Maps provide a sense of place and belonging to a world that is always changing, connecting the human experience with the natural world in a structured and organized way. This book explores how we navigate in a world without a beginning or end to the timeline.
